Dr. Maria Guajardo

Dr. Maria Guajardo is an educator, leadership scholar, and global speaker whose work focuses on leadership, dialogue, and value‑creating education. She served as Professor of Leadership Studies and as Dean and Vice-President at Soka University in Tokyo, becoming the first woman and first non‑Japanese in those roles, and now continues her work as Professor Emeritus and founder of MG Leadership Designs. Her research and teaching connect leadership, global citizenship, and diversity and inclusion, and she has helped shape educational policy and opportunities for young people in both the United States and Japan. A clinical psychologist, she studied at Harvard University and the University of Denver, and has received honors including the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame and the University of Denver Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award.

Who is eligible to join the program?

The Friendship Series is open to high school students in grades 9–12 or equivalent. Participants should be able to engage in discussions in English at a CEFR B1/B1+ level.

Is attendance required for all sessions?

Yes, students are expected to participate in all three stages of the program to gain the full experience and insights offered by the Friendship Series.

What English proficiency is needed?

Participants should have a basic understanding of English, approximately at a CEFR B1/B1+ level, to follow and contribute to discussions effectively.

How do I access the first session?

Session 1 is available asynchronously through our LMS. You will need to register on the LMS to access the materials and activities.

Will the final session be recorded?

Yes, the live dialogue session with Dr. Maria Guajardo will be recorded, allowing students to revisit the discussion and reflect on the insights shared.
